About Southbend "Silent Design" Clutch & Flywheel Packages
Southbend Silent Design Clutch & Flywheel Packages are designed to eliminate the "chatter" associated with lightweight single-mass flywheels. The clutch and flywheel packages are engineered to dampen the noise produced by the transmission, which can cause an audible "chatter" with the vehicle out of gear and your foot off of the clutch.
All Stages Include Clutch Kit & Single-Mass Steel Fywheel!
HD Kits:
The HD kits use an heavy duty pressure plate with higher-performance friction materials to provide more positive engagement and increased holding capacity.
Stage 2 Daily
Features a heavy duty pressure plate which offers increased clamping force with minimal increase in pedal pressure. Clutch disc utilizes an organic friction surface material with high metal content, offering a higher coefficient of friction and greater holding capacity than the stock disc. This clutch and flywheel package maintains a stock feel while offering superior strength and durability.
Stage 2 Endurance
Features a precision-balanced heavy duty pressure plate which offers increased clamping force with minimal increase in pedal pressure. Clutch disc utilizes an organic friction surface material with high metal content on the pressure plate side, with a Feramic friction surface material on the flywheel side, offering a higher coefficient of friction and greater holding capacity than the stock disc. Clutch engagement is positive yet smooth thanks to the high graphite content unique to Feramic friction surfaces. Perfect for street and track use.
SS Kits:
The SS series kits use the same friction materials on the disc but have an extreme clamp load pressure plate with a pedal effort increase up to 50%. The result is a more aggressive, stronger clutch that can handle most any performance upgrades.
Stage 3 Daily
Features an SFI-approved race-engineered pressure plate which offers greatly increased clamping force with a 25-50% increase in pedal pressure. Clutch disc utilizes an organic friction surface material with high metal content, offering a higher coefficient of friction and greater holding capacity than the stock disc. This clutch and flywheel package maintains a smooth engagement while offering superior strength and durability.
Stage 3 Endurance
Features an SFI-approved race-engineered pressure plate which offers greatly increased clamping force with a 25-50% increase in pedal pressure. Clutch disc utilizes an Kevlar friction surface material with high metal content on both sides, offering a higher coefficient of friction and greater holding capacity than the stock disc, as well as increased durability. Clutch engagement is positive and consistent. Perfect for street and track use.
Stage 4 Extreme
Features an SFI-approved race-engineered pressure plate which offers greatly increased clamping force with a 25-50% increase in pedal pressure. Clutch disc features a puck design and is available with or without a sprung hub. Friction surface options include Sintered Iron and Graphite Impregnated Ceramic. Clutch engagement is abrupt and harsher than with Stage 2 and Stage 3 kits.
Single-Mass Steel Flywheel:
Flywheels are manufactured by Southbend from low carbon, hot rolled steel that is highly resistant to warping and perfectly suited for the friction materials mated to them. Single mount CNC machining guarantees precise tolerances and perfect balance exceeding factory specifications. Extensive field-testing has been done to determine the proper weight for each specific vehicle and to ensure smooth operation, safety and durability under extreme operating conditions.

Note about break-in: This clutch uses a heavy duty clutch disc that performs well in very high torque use that produce extreme shear forces and heat. In order to gain this performance advantage, the disc friction material is much harder and more robust than the typical OEM organic disc. In addition, the disc backing plate, what the friction material is riveted to, is much more rigid. OEM clutch discs use a type of belleville spring washer to allow the disc to compress and be compliant when being clamped between the pressure plate and flywheel friction surfaces. These high performance clutches, however, use a solid steel backing plate which does not compress at all, this type of construction gives the disc its incredible strength, but means that the disc will require more break-in time than the compliant OEM counterpart. Keep in mind that this clutch may have trouble fully disengaging the first time it's used, and will require much more break-in than the OEM clutch to achieve normal use. Typically up to 1000 miles of use is normal to get full break-in. Be sure break-in use consists of generous stop and go as well as shifting, the slipping action as the clutch is engaged is what facilitates the break-in process. Ultimately the break-in process is one that allows the clutch disc to conform to the pressure plate and flywheel friction surfaces, once these surfaces conform to each other they perform very well and offer the maximum clutch holding power possible. Be patient with initial use and driving and you'll be rewarded with an incredible performing clutch system!
